Nathan Kanning, MD

Nathan was raised on a farm in rural Missouri. Nathan attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri where he played football and majored in communications. After college he worked on a farm for three years and in a hospital for two. Then, Nathan attended the University of Kansas school of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas. After medical school, he moved to Portland Oregon where Nathan completed his residency in General Surgery.

In 2008 Nathan moved to Sandpoint with his wife and three children. His clinical interests include cancer prevention, issues in rural surgery, and surgical laparoscopy. Nathan was recently awarded the 2009 Oweida Scholarship by the American College of Surgeons. This is given to a young surgeon practicing in rural America. He also recently performed the first single incision laparoscopic gallbladder removal in northern Idaho.

Outside of his work Nathan’s interests include – skiing, fishing, kayaking and family activities.
